The Golden Festival of Basant
The festival of Basant welcomes the onset of spring in South Asia. Basant pervades religions and countries: Hindus pay tribute to the goddess of learning, Sarasvati, while Muslims celebrate the festival in the memory of Sufi saints. Lahore and Ferozepur – two centers of culture separated by a few hundred miles but situated in different countries – are both draped in the color yellow as millions take to kite-flying in honor of spring. Basant is the time of the year that fuels not just competition but also love and passion. Golden Lentils is a yellow lentil-based snack that captures the romance and chutzpah of Basant through its sprinkling of exquisite sea salts and just the right touch of lime. Feel the freshness of a South Asian spring in a mouthful of Golden Lentils.
